When did vacations become something I needed to recover from? Not -- mind you -- that I didn't have a great time. Monday, work slammed me with those two investigations that I turned in just before I vacated -- they should have closed with only minimal clean-up work while I was gone, and instead I guess they decided that I was the only person who could finalize them, so it was rush-rush to meet the deadlines when I got back. Up side: got another "on the spot" award w/cash bonus for a project I pulled together for another department. Having caught up amazingly well on sleep while I was traveling, I immediately fell back into my bad habit of staying up past midnight. (And, of course, there was the hovering funk from Teresa's death, which had some closure with the funeral yesterday.) Thursday evening was the last Cal Shakes performance for the season -- I'd meant to do reviews but always ended up spacing them. The play-going crew (with one substitution) threw together a last minute potluck picnic dinner and have tentatively pledged to be more organized about dinners next season. (There was a general agreement to do the Cal Shakes thing together next season.) In fact, the success of commiting myself to a program of social events has convinced me to move forward with HRJ's Scheduled Blind Date Program. The theory is I advance-purchase pairs of tickets to a set of events and then find people to go with me. (The limitation is that it has to actually be a date date -- no "just friends", sorry.) I'd dabbled with the idea of getting SF symphony tickets, but was balking at the logistics of evening events in SF. Then a couple weeks ago I got a flyer for Cal Performances, and now I have half a dozen events picked out. The next step is to actually write the check and mail it off.

So if I actually get out of the chair and shut down the computer now, I have half a chance of getting to sleep before midnight tonight.
