Petticoats and Promises
This is a well-written enjoyable Regency romance, tracing the lives of two young women--best friends since childhood--who discover an even more intense love for each other on the eve of their debut into society. The social and historical background is drawn in deft strokes, providing the background for the trials and tribulations one might expect for two relatively naive women entering into a forbidden love in a context that allows them little power over the course of their lives. The ways in which they navigate their way--through enemies, allies, and compromises--rings true to the times with only a few minor exceptions. The erotic content is tastefully suited to the setting and builds naturally in intensity and detail throughout the story, but it should be noted that there is erotic content. If the book has one overall flaw, it’s the thinness of any non-romantic plot elements. All the crises, challenges, and resolutions are emotional, and I found myself wishing for other events (beyond the everyday activities of a London Season) to give the protagonist an opportunity to develop as a character. Petticoats and Promises fulfilled my desire for a solid, well-written story with a historical setting and I hope the author will continue working in this genre and explore some more complex plots in the future.
