I needed at least a little break from the lecture preparations, so after doing some work on the next two outlines over sushi (I had an "I need to get out of the house to avoid distractions" evening) I swung by the theater to see Mama Mia!. Yes, I know that in some people's eyes my love of ABBA music puts me beyond redemption. (On the other hand, Tuesday at the gym, when I needed to work off the desperate need to strangle at least one of my co-workers, after pondering between setting the iPod to Sousa, Wagner, or ABBA, I chose the last because it seemed the other two were much too mellow and laid back. So ... whatever.)

This is a FUN movie. I laughed. I cried. I sang along at points. (I think this is going to end up being one of those sing-along-cult movies.) I reveled in a movie centering around mature women being unabashedly sexual and sexy. OHMIGHOD MERYL STREEP IS SOOOOOOO HOT! Seriously. The only part of the movie that came close to the delightfulness of Meryl Streep was the Greek Chorus (often, literally Greek). Especially the ladies in the kitchen. Oh, and the old woman with the sticks. Perfect. In fact, the whole Dancing Queen procession bit. This is about the third recent movie musical that has made me think that Bollywood is making some major infiltrations into American cinematic esthetics.

Totally different subject. We got a "save the date" notice at work that they're reviving the tradition of alternating the annual summer picnic with a "formal dinner gala". My first reaction was, "Yeah, that'd be a barrel of monkeys if you don't have a date." Then I realized that it was a perfect challenge for the Dating Project: find someone who would not only be up to attending a formal employer-sponsored dinner (free food!) but could have a good time doing so. Dancing may be required. I have until mid-November. (It is, alas, on the same day as Mists Investiture, but then I don't think that cuts down the available dating pool significantly.)

I am absolutely itching to see this film! Both my stepdaughters have seen it, and they loved it as well. My love for ABBA is a badly-kept secret around here. My poor son-- it's my favourite housework music.

Sorry, my dear...didn't think ABBA was all that great the first time around (aside from the odd adolescent fantasy about dark-haired girlie, *sans* scary eye makeup).
Didn't appreciate them the second time around, 'though *Priscilla, Queen of the Desert* was kinda fun, especially the *huge stilletto on top of the bus with billowing, colourful banners" scene.
Still, it takes all sorts to turn the world around, & 'round.
Glad that you enjoyed it.

I confess that I like ABBA, too. When they were current it was cool not to like them, and I wasn't paying much attention to music then, anyway, but then when I went to Scotland the first time several of my friends were huge ABBA fans, and it was a (mainstream) cult thing, and I discovered that actually, yes, I did like ABBA. (Why, yes, I'm planning to see the movie...)

Anyway, if it is not too late, please don't go see Hellboy II without me -- it apparently has Old Irish in it, which makes it a must-see for us! I'm busy Friday and Saturday, but otherwise I think I'm free the rest of the week. Got an evening that works for you?

I need to make sure I get the lecture presentations done (or at least far enough along) over the weekend, but a weeknight next week would work (assuming I'm not still madly power-pointing).

I'm hoping to get to see Mamma Mia next week. I never really noticed Abba when they were around the first time, but more recently I realised that their music makes excellent "driving home late at night" or "doing the housework" music.

Everything I've seen and heard about the film makes it sound fun, so I do hope I manage to see it on the big screen.

I keep hoping to see it in the theater. I am unabashedly a fan of ABBA.

When [livejournal.com profile] roswtr and I saw "Mamma Mia" live on Broadway (yes, a slight boast there *smile*) it was a fantastic show. The best part, in my opinion, was the variety in the audience. As it happened the row in front of us was almost entirely pre-teen and teenage girls and the row behind us was almost entirely the over 50 set.... and they *ALL* were singing through the whole thing.

At the last number everyone got up and danced too!

I love ABBA!

I am so glad you liked Mamma Mia. I was feeling rather like an odd-ball, because I really enjoyed it. Yes, Meryl Streep was amazing. I love the fact that many of those hot dancing ladies were NOT young at all. ...And look how they moved! Such fun.

Streep was born in 1949. I love that she's 4 years older than her love interest in the movie! Yahaha! There's hope for me yet!

Do you have specific plans to see it yet? We should make some if you don't... (movies are more fun in company :-)

I went with a friend the day it opened. I KNEW I'd love it.

Yes, I'd enjoy going to a film (or many) with you. The next couple of weeks are bound because of people coming in from out of state, but don't write me off for another time.

I like just about anything with a happy ending. Life deals out enough @#$%, that I prefer not to go see anything that ends as a downer, but I love SF, fantasy, animations, historical fiction, and any sort of stuff that lets me walk out of the theater happy.

I saw "Mamma Mia" as a live musical twice, and am very much looking forward to seeing the movie. I see nothing wrong with liking ABBA.

"I sang along at points. (I think this is going to end up being one of those sing-along-cult movies.)"

My office co-worker who saw it said that everyone in the theater was singing along with all the songs, so I think you're right.

I probably won't get to see it before Pennsic (lack of time and $), but I'm glad to hear that ABBA fans seems to be in the majority out here [G]

Yes, I sang all through it. It seems to invite that. I'm sure many others in the theater did as well. It's a noisy film and fun, fun, fun!

There's a Greek chorus? Now I am even more excited to see it. ;-)

I will admit to being a snob where ABBA's music is concerned. As for Mamma Mia - in Slings & Arrows, Richard Smith-Jones thought it was the perfect stage show. As opposed to the Shakespeare festival he was supposed to be running.

But hey, I'm clearly in the minority.

Hah! Maybe it's a girl thing?

Or maybe some of us just need something more cheerful than is currently available in popular music. I don't know.
